You probably know that replacing a missing tooth as soon as possible is important and that a dental implant is an option you should consider. If you’re missing teeth, you could struggle to speak clearly and to chew comfortably. Implants can help you avoid both issues. Implants are also very durable and can last for twenty or more years. However, if you’d like to enjoy the benefits of your implants for this long, there are a few things you’ll need to do.
When you have an implant placed, your implant site will probably be uncomfortable, swollen, and bruised. Until this discomfort subsides, we suggest eating cold foods. Also, while your mouth heals, you should avoid touching your implant site since doing so can cause infection. Of course, we’ll also give you specific advice at your appointment.
Of course, there are other things you’ll need to do if you have an implant placed. We suggest not smoking after you’ve had an implant placed because doing so will increase your risk for gum disease and oral cancer. If your implant site is still healing and you smoke, your body could reject your implant and your mouth won’t heal as quickly as it would otherwise. Naturally, you should also brush and floss your implant regularly.
